I graduated high school class of 2005 in a random rural high school in North Carolina. Everyone in my graduating class knows how to navigate a file system, ie knows how to find homework.txt in My Documents/Homework, can type an essay in MS Word and could do a simple invoice or something in Excel. I don’t think they even offered programming classes, and I don’t think I met anyone who took CAD drafting or whatever, not until college.

Absolutely. Github is a TERRIBLE way to publish software or computer files, in much the same way that oatmeal is a terrible bedroom lubricant.

Same thing that’s wrong with oatmeal: Nothing, that’s just not what it’s for.

Github and tools like it are designed for codebase versioning. It’s a great tool for developers who have a need to collaborate with others and manage releases/branches. But, it’s really not great for distributing executable apps to end users because it’s not for that. You shouldn’t tell end users to clone a git repo and type make install, because that’s not normally how people manage software.

If possible, the app should be packaged and in a software repository/app store typical of the platform. Chocalatey on Windows (Microsoft has their own Windows Store, but fuck that), Brew on MacOS…if we’re talking about an end-user application for Linux, I’d recommend Flatpak because it’s become the de facto one to rule them all; if you really must host something on your own website right next to a windows .exe I will say go with appimage.

You can get hosting for distributing end user apps, Github has a service called Github Pages for this purpose, for example. But especially in the Linux world, too many creators of little things like to just point you at their git repo and only accept user feedback in the form of pull requests.

How many definitions does the English word “set” have?

captain_aggravated,
@captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yeah I don’t see anyone accepting being called “it” in English; that’s how you refer to farm animals bound for slaughter or undesirable ethnicities you’re going to exterminate.

Mostly it’s a play on Disney’s The Lion King, which has a scene where the king lion explains to his son the “circle of life” that while lion eat antelope, eventually lions die, “their bodies become the grass” and the antelope eat the grass. Perhaps there’s some political commentary about a victimizer using school lessons as propaganda to make the prey class easier to subjugate for the predator class, ie force teachers to teach the correct curriculum and the antelope will thank the lion for eating it.

Also, it’s Oglaf, so the main punchline is that the last panel somehow isn’t “Oh well, anal sex!”

It’s been awhile since I’ve regularly read Oglaf, but my memory of it is SFW comics were the exception, rather than the rule, and after the initial plotline about the sex empress’ apprentice abruptly ended, there were a LOT of issues made where the punchline was basically “they fuck in the last panel.”

By “pilots from FL” do you mean ERAU alumni?

Lots of things stopping me from doing this:

  1. I am currently 36 years old, I will not be 38 at any time during the year 2024.
  2. I do not own a copy of Wrestlemania 2000.
  3. I finished my pizza rolls yesterday.

This is the second “meme” I’ve seen trying to make the point that Taylor Swift should be immune to criticism because she’s female in the span of two minutes.

Because she has recently been in the news for suing the plane tracker guy. She Streisanded herself.

Word I think is the easiest to give up, there are other word processors that are at least as good, they’re only “problem” is they aren’t MS Word.

captain_aggravated,
@captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works avatar

That’s what I meant by “They aren’t MS Word.” The problem is MS Word is the one everyone else has and those slight differences where “Looks fine on my machine” but looks weird when the teacher sees it.

As for “advanced features like macros” who the fuck uses macros in MS Word? I’ll believe it in Excel but in Word?

LibreOffice, OnlyOffice, hell Abiword is probably good enough to get practically everyone through a bachelor’s degree writing MLA formatted essays; if you need to get more serious than that you should be learning LaTEX.

  • “Is Wayland worth using, especially with Nvidia” I have no personal first-hand experience with Wayland; I run Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition, which is still X11 for the moment. MY personal philosophy is I’ll adopt Wayland when Mint does. Basically don’t worry about it.
  • “Does bloat actually matter or is it just a meme?” It is 93.3% just a meme. The most extravagant diamond encrusted froie gras kitchen sink apocalypse bunker mega yacht Linux distro you can find is going to be slim and trim compared to any currently supported edition of Windows. You will legitimately find some folks in the community who would just rather go edit a config file than have a GUI that edits it for you, and you’ll find some woodworkers who prefer to use hand planes and chisels. A hobby’s a hobby.
  • “What are some habits/standards to keep my system organized and manageable?” Mainly, learn how the file system works, learn what /opt and such are for. Otherwise your skills for managing your files on WIndows should suffice.
  • “Any other resources besides the Arch Wiki to be aware of?” Man pages. You can read the documentation for any command in the terminal by typing “man commandname.” For example, to learn more about the change directory command, cd, type “man cd” and it will tell you all about it. It even has its own man page, you can type “man man”. All of this is stored on your system locally, so you don’t even need an internet connection for this.
  • “What do you wish you knew when you first started using Linux?” What middle click does. There’s a thing called the primary buffer which allows you to highlight and paste text simply by highlighting text, then middle clicking somewhere else. It’s separate from the Ctrl+C Ctrl+V feature. Also, what dotfiles are. Short answer is, hidden files on Unix-like systems start with a dot (.) and there’s a ton of them in your home folder. These often hold things like configuration files for applications, so backing up your entire home folder including hidden files will catch all your preferences. Plus, there are directories like .fonts where you can put TTF font files and they’ll be available to applications. It’s something you don’t often get shown during onboarding but it’s there.

My favorite feature of FreeCAD is the spreadsheet. F360’s Parameters window…it’s been awhile since I’ve used it, but you weren’t able to rearrange or sort parameters, there weren’t any hotkeys or ways to quickly enter values so you had to move your hand from the keyboard to the mouse a lot, plus it wasn’t as multifunctional.

FreeCAD…is getting there. They’re actually heading toward a 1.0 release, and bringing usability and convenience features. I’d say by 2025 it’ll be a better value proposition than the “Free non-commerical use drawbackware” tier offerings from Onshape or Fusion360.
